Symbolic Foods Among the ancient Jews, the Passover meal consisted of a sacrificial lamb, which was eaten over matzah and bitter herbs. After the destruction of ancient Judaism’s central house of worship, the Temple in Jerusalem, animal sacrifice ceased, and the seder evolved to include a symbolic version of the Temple offering alongside additional symbolic foods.
