Text

After earning her B.A. from Northwestern in 1968, Fran Schreiberg (b. 1946) moved east and became involved in a variety of activist and protest movements. Schreiberg soon became a core member of the Jews for Urban Justice leadership team. In the spirit of the Freedom Seder, Schreiberg wrote a Tisha B’Av (Ninth of Av) service. Tisha B’Av is a Jewish day of mourning that commemorates events such as the destruction of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem, and Schreiberg’s reimagined ritual protested a proposed U.S. military program. The service was held on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in July 1969 and invitations were sent to every member of Congress. Schreiberg also served on the board of the National Jewish Organizing Project, a short-lived initiative that sought to build on the successes of the Freedom Seder in order to strengthen social justice organizing within the Jewish community. In 1972, Schreiberg earned her J.D. from New York University Law School. Her early work as an activist lawyer focused on advocacy for the anti-Vietnam war movement. In the mid-1970s, she shifted her focus and has since dedicated her career to the causes of workers’ rights and workplace safety. Schreiberg provides pro bono legal services to unions and other workers’ organizations. She also manages her law rm’s charitable foundation. Fran Schreiberg ACTIVIST LAWYER JUJ LEADER
